You may have eaten one: a pomegranate. Then you know that there are all kinds of small, red compartments on the inside. These particles resemble chunks of garnet beads , which explains the name. It comes from the Latin, granatus, of course, and refers to the seeds from the aforementioned fruit, the malum granatum. Garnet beads can be transparent to opaque.

By the way, garnet beads , contrary to what the name suggests, are not only available in red. Garnet is also found in purple, orange, yellow, green, brown, black or even colorless. In 1998, a blue-pink garnet was first found in Madagascar. This variant is of course very rare and is therefore not in our range.

The Garnet is one of the Nine Gems in the Thai Order of the Nine Gems. This order was established in 1851 by King Mongkut Rama IV of Siam (later Thailand). It is the oldest and highest of Thai awards. It is also called the Sacred Order or Warap Aun. The order is awarded to members of the Royal Family of the Chakri and to very prominent Thai administrators. You must be a Buddhist to be admitted to this order.

Grossular

Grossular belongs to the Garnet group, which in turn is subdivided into the Pyralspite and Ugrandite group. Grossular belongs to the latter. To go into that in more detail is actually extremely boring because that is all physics and chemistry. Nice to know where the name comes from. Grossulare is derived from the botanical name of the gooseberry, grossularia, referring to the green garnet found in Siberia. Cinnamon brown, red and yellow variants also occur. The yellow crystals resemble zircon, but the hardness is much lower. That variant of Grossular is also called hessonite, from the Greek, meaning inferior.
