Although pectolite can be found in several places on earth, Larimar beads are only found in the Dominican Republic. Larimar is a mineral and a rare variant of pectolite. Because it is said that the Dominican Republic was part of the mythical Atlantis, Larimar is also popularly referred to as 'Atlantis Stone'.

On November 23, 1916, Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren requested permission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Mining to examine a particular blue rock he had discovered. He didn't get that permission. Finally again in 1974 Miguel Méndez, together with a volunteer from the Peace Corps, rediscovered the blue stone but this time on the beach of the coast of Barahona. Since his daughter's name was Larissa, he named the stone after her, supplemented by the Spanish word 'mar', which means sea.

Where Pectolite is always white, Larimar can also be found in light blue, teal and dark blue. That's because the calcium in Larimar has been 'replaced' by cobalt, which is blue in color.
