Because of its color and rarity, the red coral beads used to be as highly regarded as Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby. Red coral is found in deep water with rocky bottoms such as seamounts under ledges and in and around caves, where there are often strong currents. Red coral is growing at a rate of less than an inch per year! That is super slow compared to other corals. Because Blood Coral works together with red algae, which are, as the name says, red, it looks like coral itself has that color, but that's the algae because this coral is white by itself!

It was believed to have the magical ability to avert the evil eye. A string of red corals was hung around a child's neck to protect against evil influences. For that reason it can also be seen in Christian images of Mary with Child.

Most of the damage to coral reefs, of which there are more than 2,000 species and only a few of which are threatened with extinction, is not inflicted by the jewelry industry. The main culprits are fishing, rising water temperatures and deep-sea oil and natural gas extraction. Because we care about nature, we only offer environmentally responsible and legal coral here.

Sponge coral is colorful but not expensive. The natural colors are red, purple and yellow, but it is also dyed. It is a common species and therefore Sponge Coral is not threatened with extinction. It is very light compared to gemstones of the same size and therefore relatively large beads can still be used in, for example, necklaces because they do not weigh much.
