Sterling Silver Bails

Sterling silver 925 means that it is the most common alloy of silver.
This silver content consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). That other metal is needed to give solidity to the pure silver. Pure silver would be much too soft and therefore too fragile for bailing / pendant eye.
That is why the sign 925 is usually engraved in real silver parts.

Vermeil Bailes

Then we have the vermeil bail / pendant eye.
Vermeil means that it is gilded silver. Thin layers of 14 (or higher) carat gold are applied over the sterling silver. This way you get the effect of gold, but it is many times cheaper than real gold bails / pendant eyes.
